Music Review // Ava Della Pietra "Reindeer Rebellion"
For quite some time, it just feels like we've had the same set of holiday themed songs and it felt outdated. I'm not just talking about Mariah Carey, but even decades before that- we need new, fresh holiday songs to get people back into the spirit and Ava Della Pietra is helping do just that with this new song, "Reindeer Rebellion". A modern pop song which feels like some combination of Kesha and Ashnikko, this song isn't afraid to drop the beat in the chorus and it hits at exactly the right time.
While you might wonder what can be said in a holiday song that hasn't already been said, Ava Della Pietra has found a way to capture that as well. Lines such as "We've gotta turn up the joy / Turn up the love / It's not enough" reminds us that the holidays aren't always the happy times they once were, but we need to get back to that place of when they were just that. As the song also says: "Naughy list got a little long this year", which is true because it seems like every year, as a society, we slowly get worse and worse.
Whether intentional or not, there is also a line in here which says "And snow's not falling" which could be thought of as a larger scale problem within the climate of the world. Let's face it: I live in a place where it should be fifty degrees right now or colder, and by now in the past we have seen snowfall, but it's sixty degrees right now and going up to seventy tomorrow. Yes, everyone wants it to snow to have that White Christmas, but if you also can think of this lack of snow as a "what is going on with the weather" message then that's even better.
One of the things people need to remember about holiday songs as well is you want them to be fit for all ages and "Reindeer Rebellion" is just that. In terms of media such as television and movies, I could see this being part of the film "Office Christmas Party" but for the younger humans I could also see it fitting in with "Phineas and Ferb". There is just that underlying, universal message of happiness and to that end just to be reminded that we made it another year, so that should be celebrated.
