Music Review // The Boneheads "Feel The Light"
Everything about this song by The Boneheads is such a vibe. You have these acoustic strums, stomping of the feet and clapping of the hands which makes this feel like Americana but also it's not too far from being gospel. It really feels like we're going to hear a sermon and get those demons out of us, even as it opens with the lines "Give me that holy water / To wash away these demons on my back".
During the chorus the title comes out with the lines "I'm singing oh, whoa oh / Oh, whoa oh, I feel the light" and it has a way of not only getting stuck in your head but also making you want to sing along and echo the sentiments. But this song doesn't have to be about religion, it can simply be about whatever connects you with what makes you feel most like you. There are the lines "Give me that burst of sunshine / So I can jump right in that ocean and ride the waves" and this song can be whatever you do that is surfing for someone else.
At the same time there is this underlying message about escaping the way that the world has gone and where it seems to be headed. Lyrics such as "Oh, lead me to salvation / From this digital generation of fear and spite" can be less about going to church and more about just disconnecting from social media and going outside. There is something to be said here for sure about how kids used to always play outside and now they're always inside on electronic devices.
While "Feel The Light" can embrace a religious experience of sorts, it doesn't have to be about religion. There is something inside of people- inside of our instincts- which wants us to be outside connecting with nature and I think that comes through as well. No amount of sitting inside can ever feel the same as being outside in the sunshine and hopefully this song help more people feel that as well.
