Music Review // Ella Fence "Couple Kids"
When the song "Couple Kids" begins this is this dreamy rock feeling to it, which can remind me of Florence + The Machine mixed with Buddy Holly. Through starts and stops, this song can feel like it is very much driven by these guitar chords, but by the end there is a big build up that really lets the sound take over It all seems to fall apart and come crashing down as it comes to an end.
Ella Fence uses this song to work on two levels, based on the title, and in the first way there is the line: "Maybe we'd have a couple kids by now". This is in reference to the idea of them taking it slower but also to just being with someone and thinking about having kids overall. It just feels like something you want to do when you're ready, and if you rush a relationship and rush into trying to have a kid, the entire relationship can suffer.
At the same time, by the end of this song there is the idea of the title being turned into the idea that they're only a couple of kids. This is an interesting concept because if you have a parent in your life and then are thinking of having kids, you might see yourself in that role of a child and not as a parent yet. Yes, there is a lot of responsibility and maturity that comes with having children as well, but just that idea of thinking of yourself as a kid still and not as someone who is that old.
There is also a part in this song which is about the father leaving and taking trips, to which the lyrics say: "It's scary that I understand that now too". While this might be a specific instance it is still true overall that when you are old enough and start thinking of having kids, you begin to understand more of the things that your parents did. In that way, this feels like the type of song that is good for people who are of that age where they start think about having children and starting a family in that sense, which doesn't seem to be the topic of enough songs.
