Cassette Review // odd person "there is no place" (Ingrown Records)
Waves crashing onto the shore begins this sound. Piano keys join in and they seem to bring with them a certain amount of doom. Beats come in, almost like knocking, and then it's the laser blasts and abbreviated vocals. This creates a rhythm which you can almost sing along with. It still feels as if we are in the storm though. Alien tones come in now and it's like we're getting taken away, like The X-Files. This all takes us into beats now, which feel more like hip hop, and then the birds begin singing along.
Everything that made this feel like a storm before just feels so chill now, like we haven't a care in the world. It feels like we're ringing a bell out at the sea as it gets quieter, the birds are heard again, but then the rhythm and percussion continue. This can almost feel like a carnival game or a ride at an amusement park, just going around and around.
Into the next song now and we have these beats keeping the rhythm in an almost mechanical way. This is very much towing that line between chillwave and dreamwave. New tones enter the song now, which can make it feel lighter, and this brings on thoughts of vaporwave. Big beats come in now on the next song with the tin of a cymbal, sort of lasers and a monster type vocal sound which feels like it says "I something" but I'm not sure what exactly.
A sound like an open car window while driving takes us into bigger beats now which also bring out these sort of winding tones. This feels like we're driving through a desert, but also in more of an electronic way than a country way. There is also a hollowness to this, which makes it feel somewhat haunted. We get into this real whirlwind now at the end of the song, like we're just blowing around before that synth expands and opens up into space.
Beats come through now like a heartbeat and it just opens up like Phil Collins. A sharpness pierces through now. This expands like space but also feels timed, that bum-bum of the beats really driving the pressure. It all winds down like rain in a bucket. It can also just feel like heavy rain on a metal rooftop. This leaves me just feeling like we're in a hail storm. Those glass like tones shine through before the end is met with a series of distortion bombs that could spell the apocalypse.
On the flip side the synth slowly begins to come back in a droning way along with vocals. This is like a chant of sorts. It's a low drone, but also some sharpness slips out. These ambient whirrs come in now as notes, like of a bass guitar, jolt in one by one. This is like watching lightning bolts strike through the clouds. The sounds of sticks drumming pick up the rhythm and this is growing now. The electronics are coming through more like a movie such as "Beverly Hills Cop" and just like that it's gone from slow and chill to a much faster, more urgent pace.
Static now slowly starts off the next song. This is ambient drone with haunted undertones. As this one fades out the next song begins with notes and thunder cracking. This turns into a full on rainstorm. Tones come in next as hues, somewhat wavy. Magical tones set the tone for a synth symphony. There is a MOTU sound within this as well, as the live action movie went more so than the cartoon. A loud drone and now we're into synth balls bouncing around.
These ball type of tones take off to where it feels like we could be in a movie from the 1990's. This then becomes a very strong sound of water running. This slow drone can fade back and forth, but the sound of running water remains in front of it. There is also this feeling of a motor running, it has that type of sound to it where we could just be taking off in a plane but at the same time leaking. A beeping loop now with birds. This has a very strong feeling of technology while the birds evoke nature at the same time.
That ringing drones on out as the birds chirping grows louder. To feel like you've been through storms and all of these other elements on this cassette, this is like waking up to a brand new day in the aftermath of all of that.
