Music Review // Ava Della Pietra "Single For Life (Acoustic)"

If you have not yet heard the Ava Della Pietra infectious pop anthem "Single For Life" then you must go over and listen to that, then come back here and check out this lyric video for an acoustic version of the song.   As I think about the death of MTV (and how it stopped playing music years ago) I'm reminded of "Unplugged", which was always a way that I was able to watch artists perform their songs in a way which felt like an unraveling, a peeling behind the curtain if you will- showcasing the magic.

As the electric version of this song (and music video that goes with it) can feel like a big production dance number, I imagine this song being acoustic in the way that as long as you have a guitar and a voice, you can play it too.  In some ways, that makes this already anthem-feeling song even stronger because anyone can play it at any time.  I also think of this now as being the type of song a younger artist might play as a cover to sort of make their presence known in the world of music.

This music video has objects which move and it reminds me partly of the opening sequence to the film "Napoleon Dynamite", but at the same time there is a strong sense of these being pieces of a collage or perhaps used in a scrapbook.   Still, they tell a story and are visually engaging.  Of the objects you will see in here, yes, there are cassettes at one point, but I don't take it as a nod to me because right after that there are aliens in a spaceship.  We can probably think of all of these things as being intended for the video and take them at face value, but it's still fun to watch.

One of the biggest ways that I like to think about this song is in that sense of hearing a pop song on the radio and deconstructing it.   Imagine a young person who wanted to do what Ava Della Pietra does but just doesn't have the resources or know where to begin.  To hear this song in this way very much feels like something others can take as a learning experience which is pretty much the opposite of MTV dying and rather feels more like an invitation for the birth of more music and art.
