Music Review // The Whips "Together In Agony"

When "Together In Agony" first begins there is this combination of piano keys and vocals which make me think of artists such as The Rocket Summer and Phantom Planet.  The Whips just have this sound, as it kicks in with drums, guitar and bass, that could be considered pop rock.  But when you think of "pop rock", if you think of those bands being an even 50% of each, I'd say that The Whips are closer to 70% rock and 30% pop.  The Whips are definitely heavier on the rock and in that way remind me of Queen and The All-American Rejects.

This song tells a story- told in the music video as well- about what happens when a couple stays together for too long, past their expiration date if you will.  Lyrics in the song reference sharing a bed but now in that bed feeling so lonely.  They say the loneliest feeling isn't being by yourself but being with others who don't get you and I agree with that.  I feel like The Whips bring some of that out with this song as well.

During the start of this music video you can see how the couple is happy to be together, but as the song kicks in it can shift to those feelings of resentment.   In television this music video would be referred to as a "bottle episode" because it takes place all in the same place- a hotel room, I believe- but that also seems to go with what the song says.  If the video changed to where the couple was in an apartment at first and then moved to a house, for example, you might think that the location was the problem and not the people.

One thing people don't always like to talk about is how much we suffer together.  As a couple, your partner is literally changing every day.  You cannot expect the person you met ten years ago to stay the same, and that can also be said for someone a year later.   And if they don't change maybe you liked about them years ago you don't like now, so you've changed.  There comes a time when you have to kind of realize that you have fallen out of love and until you go your separate ways, this song will be the soundtrack to your relationship.
