Music Review // evvvie "How To Swallow A Lie"
If you've been following along with the music of evvvie then three of these songs on here should be recognizable to you already. But whether you have or have not, there is a pace to this EP which needs to be focused on when listening. A song is a song, but when songs come together to form an EP they can often times feel like more. As this EP begins with "Better Than Mine" it has those acoustics to start which then kick in. This can be thought of as both catchy and poppy in terms of rock.
"Sweet Dreams" comes on second with big keys to start but then it becomes that driving rock sound. "Diss Track" is a little over a minute long. It begins with these acoustic jangles, starts and stops and laughing. There is a nice guitar riff in this song and right before it ends the lyrics say: "You tell me that you love me but I wasn't enough / Well newsflash baby I don't give a fuck" This is kind of that perfect song because you don't want to spend a lot of energy on dissing someone, so it's just enough to make the point.
Nice beats and dreamy popgaze guitars come out on "Hard To Get" as I am reminded of artists such as The Cardigans. This EP comes to an end with "Another Night" which is a rather dreamy lullaby type of song that seems fitting to end on. Keeping the pace in mind, the EP holds its energy throughout but then kind of gently ushers you back into reality once the music is complete.
When you listen to songs by evvvie and think of them as singles, they become part of that small world contained in that four or five minute space. "How To Swallow A Lie" just shows how well those small worlds can come together to form one larger world. While the songs on their own take you on a journey, they have this greater path as the sum of their parts. This is not just a set of songs that evvvie has created with this EP; this is art.
