Music Review // Sarah MacDougall "Blanket Skies"

The sounds of "Blanket Skies" sound not quite like a bright and sunny sky, but like a sky with a little bit of clouds in it perhaps.   As a drum machine sound brings in slow beats with the piano keys, this is really a rather chill type of song.   It keeps this pace up until the end, when it grows faster, louder, right before it finishes.   This can remind me of the band Metric, though there are also sounds in here of other music which could be along those same lines as dreampop.

While the verses tell stories, the chorus of this song says: "And I'd go anywhere / As long as I'm with you".  This is interesting because from the standpoint of a romantic relationship I think people might feel this way but I don't.  I feel like having time apart is good for any two people. I'd easily understand how someone could get annoyed with me if they were spending every single second of every day with me.

At the same time, I can think of this as being a sort of tribute to a hero, an inspiration.   Though I can only think of one person I would apply this to right now in my life, I think of this as being like an "Almost Famous" situation, where you'll follow around a band or musician simply because of that fascination with them.  I understand that people do this, but I mean more in a documentary level than being a super fan.

Regardless of how you want to take these lyrics, Sarah MacDougall has the message of: "I just wanna be with you".   In a romantic way it's sweet and in a more realistic way it can make you think about who you'd want to kind of shadow in this modern world of ours.   But you also have to appreciate how this overall vibe of the song connects, with the lyrics being so pure and sweet just as the pop of the rock music is.
