Music Review // Ole 60 "Live at the Print Shop"

For those unfamiliar with the band Ole 60, their performance at The Print Shop is a great way to get to know them.  In between songs, the band discusses topics like how quickly everything fell into place once they blew up on social media.  This definitely makes me feel old because it's not that a band is being discovered and then offered a contract from a record label, but rather blowing up on social media.    But Ole 60 is not the type of band you'd expect to blow up on social media because they have a heavy country sound.

Using the banjo at times, Ole 60 has a truly unique sound because country in the way that people who argue over what real country music is, but it's got a little something extra added in.  The songs can be somewhat catchy in the way that they're easy to sing along with, but country should be that way-- it should be accessible so anyone can relate with it.  If you think of Dexter & The Moonrocks as being 50% alternative and 50% country, then Ole 60 could be maybe 75% country and 25% alternative.

What's funny is that they do talk about not needing a record label during this interview and they mention that all you need are ticket sales and t-shirts, though the band then mentions they have koozies and they plug their website.  (For the record, I went to their site and couldn't find the koozies) In that way, I think Ole 60 really just represents what music is about in modern times because you don't need a record label to be successful.  I really hope to see more bands coming up in this just sort of pure way but also with a sound such as this.

If you're at all unsure what Ole 60 might sound like or if they're for you just know that during this set they do a cover of Coldplay's "Yellow".   I'm not someone who likes Coldplay or goes out of my way to listen to them, but because of the Savannah Bananas I've heard the song "Yellow" more than my fair share of times.  I really think that Ole 60 just takes this song and makes it theirs with this cover, so if you want to hear some songs you can take to heart and make yours as a listener then put on Ole 60.
