Music Review // Flash Poetry "Reality, Now"

The music of Flash Poetry is not only something you can hear, it is something you can see.  This style of rapping, which can feel like poetry, is done so over a bass line and as such I can imagine this being on a stage with a bass player and drummer behind the words.   I don't always think of that full band sound when I think of hip hop, but Flash Poetry has it down like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.

I like to think of this song title- "Reality, Now"- as a nod to the Seinfeld episode about "Serenity Now", which was a big thing at the time.   But regardless of whether or not this is a nod to that, it still holds true that this is a commentary on modern times, which feels like something we should all be thinking about.  Much of this song is about rich people getting richer while poor people stay struggling and I really do believe we should strip billionaires of all of their money and diviide it back amongst the people.

One of the lyrics that really stands out within this song says: "It's pretty in the picture, probably a filter / Resolution sharp and still everything is blurred".  In the same way that we have more information at our fingertips now more than ever before and yet people choose to stay ignorant, there are also so many things online that are not real.   Not only does the filter on a picture hide the reality in the sense that the person may appear happy but is struggling, but it just opens a whole idea about AI and not being able to trust what you see online.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now, all around the world, and though Flash Poetry may not have a get rich quick scheme for you- you may not improve your life financially by listening to this song- it's still nice to know that someone else out there is feeling this as well.  Sometimes the most important thing in times like these is just knowing that we're not alone and there are others out there who feel the same way we do.  That is how change starts.  So if you're not part of the 1%, listen to "Reality, Now" and let's rise up.
