Music Review // Elise Trouw “All You Need Is Lust”
Throughout the history of music, especially in pop, there has been a surge in sexuality. Lyrics which might have been more tongue in cheek are now more out in the open. Listening to songs on the radio is one thing, but some of these artists have even more on their albums. This idea comes into full play on “All We Need Is Lust” as Elise Trouw takes a sort of mocking stance against all this.
As the bass line takes us into what is certainly a pop hit, the lyrics can be taken in a serious way if you do not quite know that they are not meant to be. However as soon as you put on the music video and see people dressed up not only as boobs but also as feet it becomes rather comical. While I don’t feel like this music video would be sexual for anyone, I’m also not here to judge.
Elise Trouw can use this song as a means to start up a conversation. Concerned parents can feel as if there is too much sexuality in mainstream music today, while people argue certain artists are not made for certain age groups. But me, I’m more old fashioned in the way that I think lyrics are better when they leave something to the imagination. In a very literal sense, sometimes less can be more.
While it may seem like creating a pop song to simply point out what’s wrong with some pop songs could be an easy task, I must assure you it is not. I’ve heard many different songs along these same lines on the radio- some with names I recognize and some with names I don’t- and if this song just happened to show up in the rotation one day I wouldn’t question it. The true beauty in this song is not just the message but how it is delivered so flawlessly.
