"We Are What We Are"

Fritz Michel has a rather calming, mellow style to his pop rock musical blend.  Somewhat like a chilled out They Might Be Giants with a little bit of country/folk thrown in for good measure, Fritz Michel also has a similar style to that of Soul Asylum on their "Let Your Dim Light Shine" album.  This song can just feel like it's telling a story, the music and words intertwined.   After listening to it a few times as well, you're certain to be singing along.

Right away I enjoy this music video because it has the vibe of an old school music video.  Many artists who can create audio with music can't always do the same with visuals- and that's fine- but it's refreshing that Fritz Michel has embraced both here.   The video does not at all seem to focus on the concept of the musician playing the song, which is something a lot of modern music videos do, and rather like the song itself the music video tells a story throughout.  This also happens to be a modern telling of "The Wizard Of Oz".

Though it is not entirely complete in similarity, the idea of this modern retelling of "The Wizard Of Oz" by Fritz Michel reminds me of when Tom Petty created a music video based upon "Alice In Wonderland".   Both of those stories are also among my favorite fandoms, so bonus points for that.  Whether you like "The Wizard Of Oz" or not though, this video is sure to draw you in and it should be seen as it is more like a little movie than just what your typical music video has become these days.

If it isn't enough to feel like you're going out of your way to watch this music video and thus absorbing the song, then the lyrics should also bring you in.  The very title of "We Are What We Are" is the epitome of equality and should be treated as such.  I also really enjoy the line: "Nothing lasts forever, I hope we've got plenty of time" because it reminds us how fleeting life can be so why argue over our differences.
