Music Review // VICKI LOVELEE "COSTAR"
Throughout your life you will have any number of different thoughts that will be shared with everyone else. One of these common threads is whether we or not we are the star of our own movie, as everyone at some point or another likes to think that they are. In that way, no one really wants to be the co-star of their own life and that is a topic which is explored in this new song by Vicki Lovelee.
Aside from just feeling like a "COSTAR" I just feel like one of the strong themes during this song is that certain people are the obvious star and thus you cannot really position yourself with them any other way. I often think about this in terms of fame and how celebrities always seem to date other celebrities because if they didn't then the other person would just be known as "Britney's boyfriend" and not their name.
Anyone who has listened to as much Vicki Lovelee as I have will hear this song and just think of it as having that signature sound. Those dramatic strings with the beats just make me feel like I'm watching a stage production. By the end there are also these deep bass type vocals and this is just that type of song that you'll hear and be pulled in musically before really thinking about what the lyrics are about.
While the chorus says "Wasn't born to be a costar" one of my favorite lines in this song is: "Spotlight looks so good on me" because it just goes to show that when you are in that spotlight and you wear it well, you kind of know it. I'm reminded of Pearl from the Ti West films in this regard. But I also think about the self-reflection in this song, as Vicki Lovelee is an artist and musician. Would being around Vicki Lovelee automatically make you the "COSTAR" as VIcki herself would be the star?
There is an element to this song where it can even feel like you are in a relationship with someone and that two becomes three so you're kind of pushed out for someone else because they're willing to be the "COSTAR" and you are not, but since I like reading way too far into things I see all of the things which this song isn't saying. I recognize that, yes, sometimes you have to be the "COSTAR" in someone else's life while remaining the star of your own. There are certainly people who know me as "Raised by Cassettes" (the star of my own life) but I'm just as equally happy to be known in some circles as "Quentin's dad", which makes me the "COSTAR" of my son's life and that's cool.
At the end of the day, the one take away from this song- which is just such a gift musically as well- is that you deserve to be the STAR of your own life. No one should make you feel like you're the "COSTAR" if you don't want to feel that way. It's the idea of a guy not letting his girlfriend go to college so she can work to pay the bills while he tries to make it as an actor. We have to do what is right for us, but we can also still be a "COSTAR" when needed. Just at those beats can balance so well with the orchestra strings in this song, so can the roles you play in your life, because it is your life after all.
