Music Review // Lily DeTaeye "Maybe It's November"

Life can come at you pretty fast and all at once.  It can leave you struggling to not only ask what day it is, but sometimes the month seems off as well.  We go through all these horrific world events and realize it's only three weeks into January, but then all of a sudden you wake up and summer is ending.   Lily DeTaeye does a great job of capturing how time can slip away from us all in this new single, "Maybe It's November".

Lily DeTaeye releases this new single as part of an upcoming album called "Studio 3 Live at Iowa PBS", which will be available on October 24th as part of the Buy Before You Stream program.   This definitely feels like the type of song I'd hear on the radio back in the mid to late 1990's when artists like The Cranberries were on the airwaves and I would have 100% gone out and purchased this as either a cassette or CD at the time as well.  (Maybe even ordered it through Columbia House)

While the song itself has these pleasant tones of rock bordering on pop, it reminds me of the softer side of a modern artist such as Slothrust.   The lyrics paint the picture of time not being on our side, as the lyrics come in: "I only have so much time to kill these days / I've gotten good at pissing it away".  This also goes on to reveal how many things are often put off until the last minute, which makes the fact that the song is about November, an end of the year month, feel more important.  We never really seem to be aware of how much time we're losing until it's too late.

To that point as well, the chorus of "Maybe It's November" sings: "I can't help but think that if we instead spent a little more time in bed I'd be on the mend" which just feels like a way of saying that we spend too much time in our lives doing things such as working just to stay alive.  Many jobs don't make it easy for us to take a day off and sometimes you just need that rest and that's okay.  The idea of positively promoting living your life but also getting the rest you need and not constantly having to work wondering if you can make ends meet should be relatable for everyone.
