Music Review // Jonathon "Boogie" Long "A Fool Can See"
One of the common misconceptions out there about the blues is that the blues is a sad music. While this can be true on the whole, the blues can also be used as a form of rebellion. The blues isn't just about being sad as it can also be about feeling fed up, like you're not going to take it any more. Jonathon "Boogie" Long does just that with the song "A Fool Can See" and it's somehow more appropriate now than ever.
I can understand that it takes time to write a song and then record it, but even if Jonathon "Boogie" Long wrote this song last week, it seems like the state of the world is that we've had three or four new topics which this song could be about since then. We're just living in that time of constant news and disappointment. This is important to note because sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, and to that degree, there is a lyric that says: "Find me a hole just to bury my head in"
At the same time, as we get into the chorus and the idea behind the song, you can also feel like people will bury their head in the sand as a means of turning a blind eye to all that is going wrong with the world. I think the idea of this song being "A Fool Can See" and the way that people out there now on social media are making excuses and turning that blind eye-- it goes beyond them just being a fool but into some other level of willful ignorance. We live in the golden age of technology and yet so many still choose to stay in the dark.
There is something about this song that really resonates with me musically as well. The guitar part feels like it's lighting this fire under me. It reminds me of Led Zeppelin, but it just takes on its own life. If you hear it and are not inspired you're not paying enough attention. Lyrics like: "So sick of being sick and tired / I'm disgusted" feel like something we've all been feeling lately, though of us with a conscious at least, and through this jolt of a sound I hope we can all come together to make that change we want to see.
