Music Review // J3M "LOVE ADDICT"
J3M has created this very fun and upbeat dance song full of synths and pop which also has a bit of a positive message to it. Back in 1985 Robert Palmer wrote a song that said we had to face it, we're "Addicted To Love" and forty years later I feel like that song has a comeback with "LOVE ADDICT" being written from the first person point of view.
During the chorus of this song J3M sings: "I know you're problematic / But I just gotta have it" and that's one of the definitive lyrics in this song for me because it draws that line between is this a positive message or not. On one hand, being an addict is typically bad- especially when you have a vice like drugs, alcohol or gambling. But at the same time, love is good, love is positive, so even if you're addicted to it, shouldn't that be okay?
As this song reminds me of current and past pop artists from Prince to The Weeknd, you'll be singing along while you get up to move your body. But that idea of being a "LOVE ADDICT" and just sort of being in love with someone because you love love, it's almost as if it could be a problem. People need to be in relationships and love other people because they love them as people and not just because they want to love for the sake of loving.
It's a very strange and fine line that is created with this song. There is a lyric about standing up for you even when you're wrong, which is good because it's supportive but it's also bad because it feels like addictive behavior. Realizing not everything is black and white is a good lesson for this song, which ends by saying: "Actually, you know what? I don't want you back", so maybe it is level headed after all. Besides, it's better to spread love than to spread hate.
