Music Review // Robert Jon & The Wreck "Highway"
Sometimes I hear these rock n roll songs that remind me of artists such as Golden Earring (which is really just "Radar Love") and Steppenwolf. I like to think of these songs as being good road songs because when you're out there, driving from state to state you just need a specific type of soundtrack. Robert Jon & The Wreck have definitely found a song that can be added to that playlist of songs for the road, but not just because this is called "Highway" either.
One of the biggest reasons why "Highway" is such a great song for being out on the open road isn't really going to feel relatable unless you've been out on that open road. The song itself is not about driving, but rather the lyrics have the line in the chorus: "Our love is an open highway". There are parts of the United States where you can just drive and feel like there's nothing around you for miles- not exit signs around for what feels like hours. Having those endless possibilities is a good way of thinking about a relationship.
But then what happens when you're on the highway and you need something? Most of the time, it's right there. We have easy on/easy off exit ramps with food, gas and lodging- all of your needs met. In many ways, the United States does cater to the highway driver and as such you should feel some comfort in your relationship, knowing that if there is something you need along the way you'll be able to find it.
At some point during the beginning of this song the vocals reminded me of Phil Collins. I also feel like there is some Tom Petty in here, but the more I think about Phil Collins the more I hear that. Musically the song can also remind me of that song called "Second Chance" by Shinedown because it's not really a ballad and it's not too fast paced but it's just that perfect tempo to keep you moving from one city to the next, all while keeping your relationship going as well.
