Music Review // Marthe Halvorsen "Change"
Sometimes a song can be about one topic but it is done so as to lead us to another topic. This is the case with the song "Change" by Marthe Halvorsen, as the title word itself- change- is important and inevitable but Marthe Halvorsen sings about the ways which we get to this change. And it is not just about gathering up the armies with "dreams the only weapons they will own", but it is a very reflective song which will leave you with a lot to think about.
With soft acoustics, this comes through with a distinct vocal style that I feel people will hear and try to relate with other singers but will ultimately come back to Marthe Halvorsen. The music feels like it has a winding way about it, yet it can also just share the same feeling of being in the grass and looking up at the bright blue sky on a summer day. It's just so relaxing and before the end comes to be dreamy in that Mazzy Star way as well.
If you're at all into science, the line "No truth is set in stone" with resonate with you. I know that people think what's true will always be true, but just thinking about the Earth and nature, you have to understand there was a time when people thought the world was flat until it was proved that it wasn't. So maybe you're just living in the time where people think something and it is accepted as truth, but in a hundred years from now someone will discover that the opposite of what we always thought is true.
As the lyrics say, this is song is both about "What we believe" and the idea that your dreams "will allow a change to come". This is the strongest message, but it is set up to show you the importance of your dreams- why you must have them- and then at the end it lets you know that by having them, sticking with them and seeing them through, you could spark a change. Whether we need it ourselves or we just see it in the world, everyone is good enough for some change.
