Music Review // Kaitie Sly "Brilliance"

On the surface, "Brilliance" is a song that has this pleasant rock tone to it which can feel rather inviting.  The melody through the guitar work can fall somewhere between Jill Sobule and Weezer, as it just feels like the type of song you could hear on the radio and it'd get stuck in your head.   At the same time, as musically straight forward as Kaitie Sly might be with this song (there is no secret hidden musical agenda) the lyrics tell a different story.

"Brilliance" is a song that works on two different levels and is about not just the average intelligence of people- not just being smart- but the people who go above and beyond that.  It's the idea in the lyrics that "My mind doesn't work that way (Dense)".  I don't want to get too deep (or political) here but I sometimes think that we watch people on television who have a lower intelligence than us because we like that feeling of knowing that we aren't quite that stupid and in some ways like to feel superior- it's just human nature.

At the same time, I really enjoy that during the chorus this songs says: "There's brilliance in every scene / As the actors move and say their lines".  I think about this less as something from studying books and more from studying scripts.  There is a show (I won't name it) where the main character just solves improbable cases and I can't watch it because it doesn't make sense to me because of the writers.  It's like how the people on "Big Bang Theory" aren't actually that smart and are just written that way.

So whether you're questioning if you're of the average intelligence or not (trust me, those super genius types are such a low percentage) or you just are tired of the ideas of things not feeling like they do in the movies, then this is the song for you.  Even not from an intelligence stand point, but just wondering why movies wrap up so nice and neatly at the end and why your life can't be the same way- it's all in the script.  I'm glad that Kaitie Sly is bringing this to light more and hopefully it can further become a point of discussion.
