Music Review // Kat Greta "I Know What This Is"

  "I Know What This Is" begins with a synth pop sound that feels chill and reminds me of mall pop.  It makes me somewhat sad knowing that there are fewer and fewer malls these days, which means eventually kids won't even know what a mall is.  Do you think that there will eventually be a genre of music based around online shopping? I certainly hope not, so let's try and stay with this Tiffany/Debbie Gibson sound that Kat Greta is helping to keep alive here.

As the song kicks in though, it picks up the pace to a synth pop like feel which can also remind me of a modern artist such as Charli XCX.  Overall the tone of it just feels very positive, almost as if it is glowing, and I like that about it.   By the end, musically, this turns into this big production feel with backing vocals and so it seemingly ends in the biggest and boldest way possible.

During the course of this song Kat Greta sings lyrics like "Suitcase, empty doorway / Two photographs left in drawers" and it just really sets the tone for this to be a song about leaving.  It's not so much that it's about a break up as it is about getting away from where you don't belong.  This also comes out in the chorus, which says: "You don't want me at all / You don't need me enough, do you?"

Sometimes in life it is important to not only know your worth but to leave when you're not being fully appreciated.  It's not always easy, but perhaps listening to a song such as this could help you see that you best be going.  A lot of the time, we don't know that we can have it better until we do, but with songs like this, we need to recognize that something better might be out there.
