Music Review // Dumb Crush "What's Gotten Into People?"
If you've been paying attention to Dumb Crush- and you should be- you'd know the songs "Witches In The Dark" and "Get Away", but on this EP "What's Gotten Into People?" there is a lot more going on. The song "Moon In Pisces", for example, asks a lot of questions but it asks a lot of good questions. Lyrics include: "Why is the sky polluted? Where do you point your gun when you shoot it?" We all share a sky, right, every country and such, so how did we manage to mess that one up?
This song also goes on to bring up the title of the EP within the lines: "What's gotten into people? Does Hollywood know that we don't want a sequel?" Someone needs to tell Hollywood we want original ideas and not sequels/remakes/reboots/etc and I'm glad Dumb Crush is putting it into song. Though this EP can feel like dark pop right away, as it goes into this second song there is a guitar part that reminds me of the song "Just What I Needed" but then as it kicks into a dreamy groove I'm thinking more of a faster paced version of The Cure. This takes us into an interlude, which is about a miniute long, and is steady but then picks up by the end.
"Annihilation" is a fuzzy punk song that just shows how much energy this entire EP has. This takes us into "Ratboy Fuck" which is just over a minute in length. This song fascinates me because it feels like something Green Day would've done before the year 2000. It is not only the fastest paced song on this EP but it is also quite possibly the most musically complex. At one point it becomes only vocals and drum sticks clicking against each other before kicking back in. This perhaps shows the true spirit of Dumb Crush, as they present a sort of controlled chaos.
By the end of the EP we hit "Get Away" and it seems to fit well at the end as we leave the EP. A dreamy feeling is within this song, as the lyrics take a jab at Kid Rock, and there is also a ripping guitar solo. I'm not going to try and think about what a full length (12 or more songs) would sound like from Dumb Crush, but this EP just works so well because it's a way to hear enough of them. As a single song, yes, you'll be left wanting more. As an EP, if you want more just press repeat. But this just feels like the perfect amount of Dumb Crush, like an extended single, and it really does make me want to hear more from them as well.
