Cassette Review // Ursula's Cartridges "Molten Glass Soup 5000" (Ingrown Records)

When this cassette first begins it can sound like a techno rave but it then shifts off into this dreamy, almost vaporwave-like state.  Beats come through and then you can hear this dub bouncing around as well.  There are all sorts of energetic chaotic rhythms and then it reminds me of "Groove Is In The Heart".   A broken pinball machine brings about distorted blasts like we're in Asteroids and this still carries a weight as if it is in space.

We jump back and forth between that pinball machine and these other more serious tones.  It can almost feel like there are two different people taking turns playing the music, sometimes competing to see who can go louder.  This feels a little bit more like glass and then speeds up into this 8bit sound, which makes me think we're playing a video game and going as fast as we possibly can.   The energy is just off the charts with how fast this one moves.   A little bit more bass into these sort of glitch tones coming through now, but everyone can just keep on dancing as the first side comes to an abrupt end.

On the flip side we begin with a song called "Crusty Japanese Tekno".  It's slow moving and has these sounds coming through like horns beeping, but they also get all warbly.  If you have an older car and your horn is dying I imagine it might sound like this, as hints of vocals not saying any words come in behind.  We get those fast and powerful beats and this whole vibe just feels like it could take you away.  There is something trippy about this, where I want to relate it with a film like "Go" but also could see it being in a film such as "Trainspotting".

As this can sound like a battle within space again, there is also this wave which washes over everything.  This reminds me of one of those Atari games where you only move side to side and have to shoot the opponents who are coming down.  At first you might have only a handful of ships to blast, but then when they all come down in that big wave, that's the sound here.  I also hear these sort of alien-like voices as well.

While the beats persist, electronic horns come in with demonic sounding vocals.  Beats blast out taking us to the end of this cassette and it truly feels like one of those hidden gems.  I'm reminded of something from the 1990's rave culture, a sound which could perhaps be only experienced live in an abandoned warehouse.  But at the same time, maybe someone back there put it onto cassette and it found its way into the future which has become now.
