Music Review // Archie Tulk "I Want To"

Archie Tulk has created something special with this new song "I Want To".  Vocals which are deep in bass come in with these strings which make it sound somewhere between neo-classical and operatic.   This is a distinct sound, as not many artists have done this before, and it will eventually kick in with pianos as well.   "I Want To" doesn't really hit me as a verse/chorus/verse song as much as an A to B song because once those piano keys come in, they stay in for the rest of the song as well.

This song flows like water to me.  When you think of a pond or lake you can think of that water as being still.  Then, if you think of somewhere that you might go rafting there are these wild rapids and that can just feel like chaos.  But the pace in which this flows for Archie Tulk is the water moving constantly.  Not too fast, not too slow, just flowing.  This also can just feel like something slowly expanding, as Archie Tulk takes us into his universe.

Artists who I hear within this song can range from Hozier, in a more mainstream sense, to Dave Scanlon and WHY? in a more specific way.   One of the lyrics I like which comes out first says: "But I'm blinded by skies and overwhelmed by my own life that's changing".  This just feels like that birth in that sense, that renewal and starting over.  This is something which I feel like we all go through perhaps more often than we realize, but it is better with music there to guide us.

Somber and somewhat mellow, this song does build from the beginning to the end, in a way that an orchestra would.  The lyrics come out like a poem, which will make you think, and I particularly pulled out these lines near the end that say:"I run into a wall that's painted wrong and stained with all the hands I couldn't lend".  It leaves so much to the imagination while still setting down clever boundaries to be explored.   A true revelation in music and in word.
