Music Review // Hooper "My Favourite Mug"
The idea behind the song "My Favourite Mug" seems to go deeper than just a coffee mug, but that seems to be the way with music and Hooper knows it. This is a rather dreamy rock n roll song, powerful on the guitar and the guitar solo parts are especially well done. It's just that type of song that's easy on the ears, chill, and if it was slightly slower and more mellow it could even be a lullaby. But it is the perfect tempo and tone to convey the message within this song, which can be found in the lyrics.
One of the first lyrics which you'll hear that makes you think about this song says: "Not an object but a friend of mine". Isn't it sort of funny in an odd way that we have these items in our home which we grow attached to but they aren't alive? I still use an old fashioned coffee pot and I remember one time I dropped one and it shattered. I felt sad, like I just watched a friend die, and that coffee pot did provide me with all of that coffee over the years so it makes sense. We form these bonds with inanimate objects but I don't think we should be shamed for that any more.
At the same time, I feel like there is something genuine and pure about feeling this way about something such as a coffee mug. We live in a disposable society right now where every year (or even sooner) all of these new updated items come out (think of the iPhone). So we cast aside things which we have that still work for the newer version. If we can be more open about these feelings we have towards appliances and the such maybe we won't be so quick to replace them and that would also make the world a better place overall for many reasons.
Ultimately, this is a love song by Hooper. You don't have to even think of it as being about the relationship between a human and a mug though. There is a line that says: "No we don't have much to say" and that just makes me think about living with someone, waking up in the morning still tired so you don't want to talk, but you're still grateful to just share that space with that other person. And a lot of times, yes, those moments of silence that you enjoy and might end up missing one day come with a cup of coffee.
