Music Review // Joanne Shaw Taylor "Wishing Well"
Whenever an artist does a cover song it's either very obvious or rather unknown. Listening to this version of "Wishing Well" by Joanne Shaw Taylor, not a lot of people (myself included) probably recognize it right away as it is originally by a band called Free and from 1972. I'm not really that knowledgeable about the 1970s in music- it was before my time- so I've not heard of this band Free before now, but I do enjoy this song.
With big guitars and that sound which is somewhere between rock n roll, country and the blues, Joanne Shaw Taylor just makes this feel like the type of song that when it's playing you have to stop and pay attention to it. There is a big, commanding rock sound within here that could be along the same lines as Heart or Joan Jett and it just draws you in.
This music video takes place in a bar and there are certain artists who I feel can pull off the bar scene and not all of them can. Somewhere between that scene in "Adventures In Babysitting" and a movie such as "Roadhouse", there is just a certain vibe that comes with playing in a bar and Joanne Shaw Taylor has captured that here, within this sound, as well.
One of the great things about a cover song is that it can either take you back to the time you heard the original or it can open a whole new world for you. This song is going to do both, depending upon your age and knowledge of music. If you knew this original song, you're going to feel a bit of nostalgia. If you didn't, you're likely going to look up the band Free and listen to them and be taken to a whole other world of music.
