Music Review // Nok Novum "Dad Problems"

 

Nok Novum has created this sort of rock opera here with the song "Dad Problems".  Right away, from the song title, I was expecting this to be a cheesy song with lyrics about how it's tough being a dad, so when this song came out instrumental I was more than happy.  This song, musically, is also anything but that annoying type of pop punk I thought this might sound like based on the title and that's also refreshing.

"Dad Problems" begins with a very heavily distorted guitar.  It's rockin' and feels like it's close to being on that metal border.  Then, it breaks down into this funky bass line which reminds me of the RHCP, and that just takes this song into a funk/soul direction.  The guitars then become dark and thundering, which bring out the doom and metal within here as well.

We drift into more of a post rock state as it all becomes rather dreamy and just feels like it can put us into a trance.  As it feels like we're fading away into nothing, big, heavy crunchy guitars come in to once again deliver that havoc that could make this into one of the heaviest and most threatening sounds you will ever hear.

What I love about this song- and Nok Novum- is that many people can tell whether a song is happy or sad or angry based upon the lyrics.   But without lyrics here, Nok Novum has managed to show these emotions so easily that in order to feel them right along with the song all you have to do is listen.    There is power in words (lyrics) but if you allow yourself to truly listen, you'll find that there can be even more power in music.
