Music Review // earth2zoe "typical"

This new single by earth2zoe is anything but "typical" and even the lyrics agree.   This isn't a song about something being typical as much as it is about those situations and people who are not typical.   This is expressed in the lyrics with the lines- which come out rather fast- "I don't want to be dramatic but I can't breathe when you're next to me".

At the same time, you can feel that something might by typical simply because it's ordinary and therefore if you don't really feel like it's special then you're going to let it go.   This is the idea behind the line "You are just a phase I outgrew".  The duality of these lyrics is that this song is about someone who is in a typical situation and must leave it because it's boring but also they are not typical which is part of why they must move on.

There is just something about the word typical that it can mean things in ways other words cannot.   You couldn't put the word "special" in this song the same way because saying you're special (which is the same as saying you're not typical) is not the same as saying someone else is in a situation that isn't special.  Not being special isn't the same as being typical because being typical feels more habitual in the sense that it's just always happening.

Through this pop music with soul, earth2zoe has created a catchy song which you could find on the radio for sure.   It's pleasant and just doesn't seem like it could offend anyone who heard it.   It reminds me a bit of the song "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield, mostly because of the delivery of the lyrics.  It just feels so rare to have this pure of music and in such a way which no one else seems to be expressing themselves these days.
