Music Review // Ryan Wayne "Grand Illusions"

 

Ryan Wayne paints this picture on "Grand Illusion" which feels like it is more about the music than it is the lyrics.   At first this could be described as trippy elevator music but as it kicks in the sound becomes something closer to that of Pink Floyd, as it feels like we are being taken on a magical journey.   The song in itself becomes this soundscape which makes it feel like we are wrapped up in an illusion.

One of the lyrics in here which really should hit home for a lot of people says: "I could say it better if I wrote it in a letter for you" This is also because of the way that he feels he is angry and so there might be some truth behind the mean things which he says.  I've always felt like I made a better writer than a public speaker and so having that idea of being able to write something down versus trying to say it is comfortable for me.

The words also don't come at times, as other lyrics from Ryan Wayne include: "I don't know what else to say"  I do believe that there are times where we run out of words.   We say what we need to say, all that we feel like we can say and so we just hit that point where we can't say anything else.  This could also be part of the "Grand Illusion" and that lack of words paints a specific picture.

Before the song is over backing vocals come in and then there is the line: "When your grand illusion starts to fade away"   This could work for either the singer or the subject of the song, but I think sometimes we can just paint people and even situations into a certain light- put them into a better perspective than they are.  Then, in time, that illusion we have created fades and the truth comes out.  This song is a good reminder to always be seeking that truth.
