Music Review // Jovin Webb "I'm a Drifter"

 

Right from this first guitar riff you know this song is about to be some serious blues.  As it drives through the verses, keys and percussion come down heavy and crunchy in the chorus to show everyone just what the blues music is all about.  Jovin Webb has found a way to really just demonstrate this and become just such a huge part of blues music in terms of the direction I would point people in for modern examples.

The lyrics on "I'm a Drifter" are what you might expect based on the title.   Lines like "I'm always running / I'll never stop" can apply to both that drifter lifestyle but also the lifestyle of being a musician, always on the road, always on tour.  There is also something to be said for the drifter lifestyle because of the current state of the world where maybe living out of your car or a van is less expensive than paying someone rent and to that end as you keep moving you also get to see the world.  

One of the more curious lines in this song says: "Heading to places that I don't belong"  This just goes to show that not only are you out there but you're getting into trouble.  You could think of this as being as innocent as parking in a parking lot, such as Walmart, where it says not to park overnight but it could also be much more devious as other lyrics imply perhaps being in the bed of someone who you might not be supposed to.

There are a lot of cliches about moving, how a rolling stone gathers no moss for example, and in that sense I do feel like as long as you keep moving maybe you can outrun death.   But even if you're not moving in a physical sense and drifitng in the way which Jovin Webb sings about here, you can still keep your mind learning and growing so you don't feel stagnant or stale.  At times that might even involve doing things you've never done before.
