Music Review // Versa "Flew the Coop"

Versa has created a sound which combines elements of dreamy rock with that of an orchestra.  There is a winding sound and strings like banjos can come through as well.  This is easy enough to hear, but as the music video goes on you can see the band playing and that will show you the violin, keyboard, guitar and other instruments so there is no doubt about what is coming out here.   At times this song can just also have the same energy as Coldplay.

"Flew the Coop" is interesting both lyrically and visually, within this music video.  The lyrics sing the title with the lines: "Kissed my mother goodbye / Flew the coop".  Then later on they also say: "And it's too late / Summer's fading"  This makes it feel like the person is leaving to go off to college or into the workforce, you know, just a child who has grown up and is moving out.  The idea of summer fading makes it feel school related though, as you'd leave for that Fall semester.

This music video is about as complex as the music itself.  At the start, someone is shown walking through the woods and eventually finds water.  I think it's a lake but the song sings about a river and I'm no body-of-water-expert.   This person eventually undresses, reveals a swimsuit underneath and jumps into the water.  Dark clouds of smoke take over everything and then the person is out of the water again.  This shifts into the band playing in a technicolor way and then it becomes more like full on animation in bright colors.   It is definitely something visually pleasing to the eye.

For all of the sounds, the abstract nature of the music video and even the lyrics, at heart I feel like this is a song about leaving.  Everyone leaves somewhere at some point in your life because even if you live in the same house, have the same job and never have anyone live with you who might leave, we'll all eventually leave the plane of existence.  So no matter how deeply you want to think of the idea of moving out, you can explore it within this song for sure.
